Illinois Public Interest Attorney Loan Repayment Assistance Program
Through the Illinois Public Interest Attorney Loan Repayment Assistance Program, qualifying attorneys will be able to qualify for money towards paying off their student loans through this state grant program. This program is only for residents of Illinois and allows applicants to qualify for up to $30,000.00 towards paying off their student loans. Eligibility?
This program was created to encourage qualified individuals to pursue careers in Illinois as one of the following:
- Assistant State’s Attorneys
- Assistant Public Defenders
- Civil Legal Aid Attorneys
- Assistant Attorneys General
- Assistant public Guardians
- Illinois Guardianship
- Advocacy Commission Attorneys
- Legislative Attorneys
The goal here is that you represent one of the following branches and you use your services to protect the rights of Illinois’ most vulnerable citizens or promote the quality of enforcement of the state.
Under the program, applicants who are licensed members of the Illinois Bar in good standing, have eligible debt in grace or repayment status and are employed as public interest attorneys with a qualifying employer in Illinois, may qualify for a forgivable loan to assist in payment of their education. For purposes of this program, a forgivable loan is one for undergraduate, graduate, or law school educational expenses made by the government or commercial lending institutions, or educational institutions.

What is the award amount?
Through the Illinois Public Interest Attorney Loan Repayment Assistance Program, applicants may be able to get up to $6,000.00 per year with a maximum allowance of $30,000.00 during the attorney’s career.
